Srinagar, Apr 20: Even as the colleges across the Valley remained closed for the third consecutive day today, the students of higher secondary schools at various places including Srinagar took to streets to protest, leaving a girl injured in ensuing clashes in Nawakadal area.
Witnesses said that the clashes erupted between the students and the government forces in Nawakadal area of Srinagar, Kangan area of Ganderbal district, Goshbug Pattan area of Baramulla district and Bandipora district after the forces tried to thwart the student protests using tear-gas shells.
Scores of students and some cops were injured during today’s clashes. While most suffered minor injuries, a girl however suffered grievous wounds in her head.
In a statement issued here, police said “miscreants and some students” of Government Higher Secondary School Nawakadal pelted stones on a paramilitary forces’ camp at Braripora Nawakadal, in the jurisdiction of Police Station Safakadal.
“During this stone pelting one girl -- Khusboo Jan, daughter of Ghulam Mohammad Kuchay, resident of Noorbagh, was hit by a stone on her forehead. She was shifted to SMHS Hospital for treatment where her condition is stable so far,” the police spokesman said.
Later in the evening, in a separate statement police termed as baseless the rumours about another girl’s health, also a victim of stone-pelting, who is undergoing treatment at SMHS Hospital in Srinagar.
"Some miscreants floated rumours regarding Ms Iqra, daughter of Mohammad Sidiq Misger, resident of Hawal, who was hit by a stone on April 17 at Sakedafar Safakadal during a stone pelting incident."
Police said that Iqra, who is under treatment in SMHS Hospital, is recovering fast.
“The rumours spread are baseless and are as such refuted,” said the police spokesman .
